What Is Surgical Dentistry?

Surgical Dentistry deals with the removal of teeth from the dental arches. There are a number of cases wherein teeth may require extraction; these include grossly carious teeth, teeth that have sustained vertical fractures, failed Root Canal treatments, bone cancers, space-making in Orthodontics, to relieve dental crowding, and dental impactions

Impaction and Extraction of Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth impaction surgery is one of the most common procedures performed by dentists around the world. Third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, are the very last teeth of the permanent dentition to erupt in the oral cavity.

By the time they begin to erupt, which can be at any point between the ages of 17 and 25, there may not be enough space left at the far back of the upper and lower arches to accommodate them. This is why wisdom teeth get impacted, and erupt in directions that may not always be straight and downward.

When impacted, wisdom teeth can cause a number of problems such as:

  • Damage to the adjacent teeth (second molars)
  • Pericoronitis, or the inflammation of the portion of gum covering and surrounding the erupting wisdom teeth
  • Trismus, or limited mouth-opening
  • Inability to eat or chew from the affected sides
  • Pain and bleeding
  • Bad breath stemming from infection, and inability to properly clean the affected area

Some of these symptoms can be partially managed with the help of muscle relaxants and painkillers, but the permanent solution to this particular problem is Extraction. The type and stage of impaction can be determined with the help of a full-mouth radiograph. Based on the findings of this x-ray, dental surgeons chart a plan for the removal of the third molars.

It is important to understand that third molars aren’t always impacted. Many people are blessed with wisdom teeth that erupt normally, and painlessly into the oral cavity, in which case there is no need to extract them.

We offer a number of different sedation options for our patients to choose from, in order to make third molar extraction a stress-free, and painless procedure for them.
